Weeki Wachee Springs State Park
Weeki Wachee Springs State Park is one of the oldest roadside attractions in Florida. Its foundation was laid in 1947 by Newton Perry. The magical allure of the mermaids swimming in a first-magnitude spring has drawn visitors from around the world. Today, you can still witness the magic of the mermaids, take a riverboat cruise, and canoe or kayak on the Weeki Wachee River.
This 538-acre park features a first-magnitude spring and a 400-seat submerged theater to view the live mermaid show. Buccaneer Bay offers a fun-filled flume ride for thrill seekers of all ages. Devil's Den Spring
It is located north of Ocala and south of Gainesville in Williston’s small town. The Devil’s Den Prehistoric Spring is in the middle of rural Florida. And while this might be off the beaten track for most, if you are interested in caves or diving, this is an area to check out. This area is also home to the Blue Grotto Dive Resort, another cave system you can explore. There’s no such thing as a “best time” per se. The Devil’s Den it’s popular year-round and does not have a low season. It gets packed with snorkelers in the summer, and it is very popular for SCUBA divers during the winter. It’s also a great place for couples to snorkel or SCUBA in!
The Devil’s Den is essentially an underground cave spring that has an opening exposing it and providing light. This is formed by a karst window created from the dissolution of soluble rocks. The original opening at the surface appeared to be a sinkhole. Before 1990, visitors had to squeeze through a small hole to reach the spring waters. Once the cave became open to the public in the mid-1990s, the opening was enlarged to create a more accessible access point. Predominantly a dive center, the company that owns it offers scuba diving and snorkeling experiences.
The cave reaches depths of 54 feet, and the surface is 120 feet wide. I must admit that it’s smaller than I anticipated. Or, maybe a better way to describe this is I assumed that we would be able to snorkel under into spots of the cave.
Flamingo Gardens
Flamingo Gardens in Davie combines my all-time favorite things, and they are the four main reasons to love this outpost in the suburbs: Florida history, Florida flora, Florida birds, and Florida wildlife. At present, it is home to the biggest tree in Florida as well as 3,000 tropical and subtropical species of plants.
Two decades ago, Flamingo Gardens began developing a new area of the park, the Everglades Wildlife Sanctuary. Over the years, it has added animals so that now it has more than 80 native species of birds and animals, including river otters, bald and golden eagles, bobcats, tortoises, a black bear, and a Florida panther.
At Flamingo Gardens, you can even feed the flamingos, whose big funny beaks are very gentle as they scrape your palm for handout food pellets. Be sure to buy a $1 bag of flamingo food when you buy your tickets. It wasn’t just the kids who thought this was the coolest thing ever.
Warm Mineral Springs Park
Warm Mineral Springs contains 9 million gallons of fresh water which replenishes itself every two hours. This natural resource is comprised of 51 minerals, which is the highest mineral content of any natural spring in the United States. The spring has been added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places partly because it is one of the most important underwater archeological sites in America.
During exploratory dives in the 1950s, the remains of a prehistoric hunter and seven other humans were discovered in a very well-preserved state. Similarly, evidence of several creatures has been extracted from the spring, including saber tooth tigers, giant sloths, tortoises, and even camels.
Today, with a goal of increased wellness for everyone, Warm Mineral Springs offers a natural experience to residents and visitors alike who want to soak in the warm waters.
